First Responder

Course Description:

The First Response course enables graduates to stabilize emergency situations in prehospital environments. This training is ideal for security personnel, teachers, fitness instructors, health and safety committee members, designated workplace first aid team members, volunteer firefighters, internal EMS personnel, firefighters, wilderness guides and outfitters, camp instructors, and lifeguards.

Heavy Equipment Operator

Course Description:

The Municipal Training Organization will conduct a Heavy Equipment Operator training. It gives licensed drivers enhanced safety and vehicle management skills. The Hamlet and MTO open this training to municipal employees and the general public but space is limited! Each student will be required to have hard hats, reflective safety vests, and CSA approved steel toe boots.

Prerequisites: 
  • Participants must be resident of the hamlet where training is happening
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver license for at least one year

First Aid

Course Description:

This two-day course is in Standard First Aid with CPR Level A and AED. This course curriculum is delivered in accordance with the Canadian Red Cross Standards.

Confined Space Entry Hazard Awareness

Course Description:

Confined and restricted spaces are work areas which are not intended for continuous occupancy, and which have by design, limited or restricted entry or exit. Confined Space Entry Hazard Awareness trains personnel to recognize hazards of working in a confined or restricted space and to carry out confined space entry and attendant duties safely.

Bylaw Officer 1

Course Description:

This five day course is Phase 1 of a two-phase program of instruction for Municipal Bylaw Officers in towns and Hamlets across Nunavut. This course designed to provide the officers with urgently needed knowledge and skills required to perform their duties.

Dust Suppression

Course Description:

This course teaches about dust suppression, the application of it on the roads and how to do it safely. Through the use of calcium chloride and water, participants learn how to make roads dust free.

Required safety gear for this course include: safety boots, dust masks, goggles and gloves.

Small Systems Water Treatment

Course Description:

The Small Systems Water Treatment Course is part of a long-term strategy to ensure all personnel who work within the water system understand their role in ensuring the safety of the municipal drinking water system. Participants may include Water Treatment Plant Operators, Water Truck Drivers, Water Truck Driver Assistants, Foremen or Public Works Directors and/or and Building Maintainers, depending on the structure of operations in your municipality. This course will provide a foundational knowledge for drinking water operations, which will be built upon for further training.

Class 7 & 5 Driver Training

Course Description:

The Class 7 course will be in class training that will run for 5 days. This course is a prerequisite to obtain the Class 5 License.

Class 7 Training learning outcomes:
  • Knowledge of the rules of the road and safety while operating a motor vehicle
  • Understanding the basic standards for a vehicle and its components
  • Learn safe driving practices
  • Recognition of circulation signs, colors, and shapes
The Class 5 Driving lesson

The training days will be divided 2-3 hour sessions of driving lesson with an experienced instructor. Each student will receive a minimum of 5 hours of one-on-one lessons. Students will learn the fundamentals skills of driving. They will be assigned specific times to attend training. The methodology and driving techniques will be adapted to the skills of the students.

Water, Wastewater, Solid Waste Management – Water Testing

Course Description:

This course provides an overview of water, wastewater and solid waste. It provides the specific knowledge and skills that are essential for Municipal Works Foremen to ensure that programs are in place to protect the health of the community, protect the environment, and ensure that maximum benefit results from public spending.

Class 3 Air Brakes

Course Description:

Class 3 Air Brakes training provide skills and knowledge for new drivers to tests for their license. It gives licensed drivers enhanced safety and vehicle management skills. The hamlet and MTO open this training to municipal employees and general public but space is limited!

Prerequisites: 
  • Participants must be 18 years old
  • Possess a valid Class 5 license for at least one year
  • Selected candidates will have to pass a medical examination (MTO will cover the cost.)

Class 1 Water Treatment

Course Description:

The Class 1 Water Treatment course will provide more in-depth training for Primary Operators with prior training in Small System Water Treatment.
